George Mullins Turns Professional in StyleMaking the transition from amateur to professional in any sport is always difficult and golf is no exception.
For many amateur players, it can be extremely tough mentally to go from being the best player on the course and favourite to win to being the newcomer and competing with experienced professionals.
However, the way George Mullins conducted himself in an interview following his victory at Essendon Country Club in 2016 not only belied his age but also his experience in that environment.
The 19-year-old golfer, who had recently turned professional was asked to comment on his victory at Essendon Country Club by the Jamega Pro Golf tour. This was a tournament which was played over two days and ended with Mullins top of the leaderboard with a score of 4 under par.
Speaking in-front of the camera, Mullins conducted himself very professionally because playing golf in-front of a crowd of people does not always translate to being able to talk in an interview. However, Mullins was happy to discuss the tournament and his thoughts on how he played over the two days.
Having won the tournament, it was no surprise to hear Mullins talk about how well he played and he was happy to admit it was probably the best he had ever hit the ball. Despite talking about how well he played, there was no hint of self-indulgence or cockiness in the way he spoke. It was clear Mullins knew he had played well and that transmitted nicely throughout the interview without ever becoming egocentric.
Mullins highlighted how he claimed three birdies in the first round and was happy with the way he putted. However, he also mentioned his three-putt on the final hole of the day, which resulted in a dropped shot.
It was good to hear Mullins discuss how he did not allow that to trouble him over night and the manner in which he came back the following day full of confidence. Having the confidence to put a final hole disappointment behind you over night and come out the next morning and play well is a fantastic trait to have as a professional golfer.
Mullins also mentioned during the interview how he felt he was cruising at the midway point of the second round, only to drop shots on the 15th and 18th holes. Thankfully it did not cost him his place at the top of the leaderboard but is another example of the experience a tournament like this can bring for a young player.
It was also great to hear Mullins talk about the golf course and how it was in amazing condition. Despite the interview being about his success, the fact the Englishman took the time to mention the quality of the course is a real plus point and shows Mullins appreciates everything that goes into the staging of golf events.
George Mullins is a young professional golfer who not only plays well but speaks well off the course, which is a big component at the top of the modern game.
