Unboxed Interview with Craig Spider Richards: Craig on why he’s called Spider and his mum’s tough ultimatum on his future in boxing!

Craig Spider Richards

I don’t believe in this padding your record, cherry-picking facts, I believe you should get in there, fight no matter what.

Cece

Hello everyone I’m Cece, from Unboxed UK, and today we’re working..and we’re unboxing with Craig Spider Richards – that’s his catchphrase not mine, I’m not trying to coin it. Craig, over to you, how are you?

Craig Spider Richards

I’m very well, thank you. How are you?

Cece

I’m very well, thank you. Thank you so much for coming here and meeting with us today. Now my first question, I’m going straight in – why do you call yourself Spider?

Craig Spider Richards

It happened because every time I was sparring, I was like, I was hitting people at different angles, so he kept saying he’s like a spider, seems like he’s got more than two arms and Pete was like, that’s why we call him Spider. And now Pete was saying he thought of the name Spider when I saw his hair and that’s what he’s saying now.

Cece

I have to say I came to that conclusion in your last fight in Cardiff because I just saw with his hair action and I was going to invest in a hair band for you but I wasn’t sure if that was part of your look.

Craig Spider Richards

I’m not sure when I thought my hair out of course someone said I was putting Vaseline on my head every time I come back to the corner, but they were just trying but it just you just have to put it back in the hairband.

Cece

So is it a self-appointed name or just someone gave it to you?

Craig Spider Richards

Gave it to me.

Cece

And you’re happy with that?

Craig Spider Richards

I hated it at first, but now I got used to it.

Cece

But now it’s part of you?

Craig Spider Richards

But now I got used to it and like it, but first I hated it. At first I actually hated it, I don’t want to be called Spider. But I got used to it.

Cece

I want to stop and talk about your very early beginnings and what made you go into boxing and what age did you start?

Craig Spider Richards

Well growing up I never really watched football, I watched boxing. So always I was interested in boxing. I never thought of it as a career, I always liked boxing. So I said to my Mom yeah, can I do some boxing, and she said, no way, that’s for airheads. Stick to education.

Cece

Airheads. Oh dear, does she take those words back now?

Craig Spider Richards

Yeah, yeah, now she takes it back. There was actually a coach called Terry Palmer, he’s the one that kept pushing me because I didn’t thought that I was that good and he kept saying to me after he watched me spar, he said, can I talk to you in the back. I said yeah. He said listen my man, I’m telling you, if you carry on you’re gonna be a champion. I’m laughing, I’m like, don’t be silly. No, I’m telling you, you’ve got something there. He said to me, If you come, I’ll pay your subs and if you bring a friend, I’ll pay their subs, so you don’t have to pay- just keep coming. I’m telling you’ll be a champion. This time, there’s so much elite fighters in the gym, I figured, he don’t know what he’s talking about. He said I can use all the new equipment at the back, etcetera.

Cece

And what they had told me, had old equipment and new equipment.

Craig Spider Richards

Yes. You know when you go in to the amateur gym, you go with the gloves and headguard, but everybody uses them so it smells.

Cece

Yeah, but he allowed you to-

Craig Spider Richards

He had brand new ones in the back, he’s like, every time you come, tell me, I’ll unlock this cupboard and I’ll give you new equipment to use.

Cece

Wow. Was that not enough evidence in itself to prove that he was willing to invest in you?

Craig Spider Richards

Yeah but I went to thinking, no. I still don’t know what he’s talking about. I mean, what’s his agenda? Because I’m not that good. So I’m thinking, why does he keep telling me this? But he was motivating me. So sometimes when I just didn’t want to go, I just want to hang out with my friends, etc. He kept- in the back of my head, this man believes in me, I shouldn’t really let him down. So I kept going. Eventually, new coaches come in, etc. He weren’t the head coach no more, he had a fall-out with a coach. He left. He then made his own academy. I then bumped into him, contacted me. Look, I got my academy, come now.

Cece

What was this academy called now?

Craig Spider Richards

It was Palmer’s Academy. So his name was Terry Palmer, so he made his own Palmer’s academy. I had my first fight, I remember getting fired. And my mum actually said to me, I don’t want you to box. She said, I’ll make you a deal. I said what’s that. If you lose, you quit.

Cece

Oh wow. Gosh.

Craig Spider Richards

She said, if you win, you can carry on. But in the future, I want you to go study, go uni, and get a job. I said alright, call. So obviously I won, she watched me fight, I got Fighter of the Night. I was in the newspaper, I don’t know how. So from then, my mum said to me, do you know what? You’ve got talent. She said, do your boxing.

Cece

How did that feel when she said that? When you got the seal of approval from your own mum?

Craig Spider Richards

It was good but she then said to me, I was boxing. She said to me, so what’s your plan? She said, look. If you study, you study for 3 years, 4 years and then you turn over, and you get paid and you get a job. She said, amateurs aren’t gonna pay so what’s your 3, 4 year plan? I said, I’m gonna do this, I’m gonna do the Box Cup, I’m gonna win the Box Cup, and I win this. And in 3 years, I’ve done everything I said I was gonna do. In 3 years to the day, I’ve turned professional.

Cece

Wow.

Craig Spider Richards

And then before I’ve turned pro, my granddad, he fell out with me. My dad was like, listen, be realistic. You’re not gonna advance, you don’t understand professional. You’re a talent but why are they gonna choose you? He was like, boy from South Lo- you’re not gonna get chosen. Especially- Just scrap it. Go get a real job, etc. So now I’m gonna do boxing, I’m gonna go pro. They’re like, all right then, cool. You know. Full everything now. And then, I also turned pro before my granddad died. He had then approved of it, and put my poster on his favorite chair outside the front.

Cece

Oh that’s so amazing.

Craig Spider Richards

And he got my- My dad said, you know what? You proved me wrong.

Cece

That’s such a beautiful story.

Craig Spider Richards

It was a bit- shaky, the family but-

Cece

A bit touch and go.

Craig Spider Richards

But as everyone sees, they’re my biggest supporters now.

Cece

I have to say, seeing your sisters ringside. And they are most definitely your biggest supporters.

Craig Spider Richards

Exactly.

Cece

I think everyone I’ve spoken to, when I mentioned I was interviewing you, and I asked, you know- What you think about the supporters? And they always- the first people they mention are your sisters.

Craig Spider Richards

Yeah.

Cece

Now you’ve touched on titles so, just a couple of weeks going, you fought with Frank Buglioni, with 5 days notice for a title fight. Tell me how you feel that you’ve come out the other side of this? Because for me, it was a tough night for you, but it wasn’t the worst night for you, was it?

Craig Spider Richards

No. It was a good fight. It was 12 rounds, I’ve never done 12 rounds, but I think in the rounds I stayed a lot in my comfort zone because I was worried about gassing out for the later rounds.

Cece

Okay. Because you’ve never done a 12 rounder.

Craig Spider Richards

I’ve never done 12 rounders so everyone told me they’re really hard. So although I was feeling okay going through the rounds, I was thinking at some point you’re probably gonna crash on your fitness. After- you know 12 rounds and as you’re changing- shadowboxing, thinking, why have you got so much energy? You come out without the decision, you got so much energy, you should’ve been putting that in the ring. So for me, now that’s broke a barrier of the 12 rounders. And now, it’s actually motivating me. So I’m like, work. Every round. I don’t believe in this padding your record, cherry-picking fights. I believe you should get in there and fight no matter what. I think people come out, spend their money, taking that day off work, to come and support you. Putting their own, hard-earned cash in to boxing- to come see you box. And you’re gonna be like, I’m not gonna fight. It might be hard. Or I feel a bit ill. No. You go out there, you fight. You go out there and fight and that’s what it’s about. It’s about- like going out, displaying yourself, not letting the fans down and giving them the fight as they want.

Cece

Craig, tell us about some of your highlights so far.

Craig Spider Richards

Okay. I think the major three highlights that stuck in my career. First, obviously my first fight made with Eddie Hearn. Child. Make my debut, and stopping the guy in 49 seconds. It was a good moment to start my career. Secondly, was when he gave me- and O’hara our own show. Out on the Anthony Joshua public workout. It was just- too inspiring. And it was the first time I was on any sort of SKY viewing- I think on the SKY Sports stream or something. And to knock the guy in one round, laugh on SKY, was a very good moment for me. And obviously thirdly, was boxing on the Kell Brook-Golovkin show at the O2 Arena. My first O2 fight on the biggest show we had all year. So that for you- definitely my defining-

Cece

The top 3 defining moments. Do you want to give your social media a shout out?

Craig Spider Richards

Instagram, _craigrichards_. Twitter, it’s @craiglrichards. Before I go, I have to thank all my sponsors who have been supporting me.

Cece

Do you want to give them a shout out?

Craig Spider Richards

Yes. Like, Lewis Access, been a very good supporter. The Meal- The Meal Team.

Cece

Oh we love The Meal Team. There you go.

Craig Spider Richards

Oh, The Meal Team. Their food. Oi. Herbal Fitness. Of course, Sean. The Print Town. He’s supporting me, helping me out so much as well. Obviously Ringside Sports. They’ve supported me and sponsored me from the amateurs so I have to be- Dave Hill, been a really nice guy. So many of you who’d just been behind me. Elite, been sponsored by the gym for a while. All these- stuck behind me.

Cece

That’s a long list of sponsors. Wow.

Craig Spider Richards

Yeah. They’ve just- all PT. We’ve had a lot of you support me for a while and I just appreciate it.

Cece

Boom. High five. Well done, Craig and best of luck for what’s to come.

Craig Spider Richards

Thank you. I appreciate it.

Cece

Awesome.

Craig Spider Richards

Cece

Craig Spider Richards
